by Lim Kit Siang

(Penang, Tuesday):  DAP is greatly concerned at the deadlock  among Dong Jiao Zong, Hua Zong and the various Chinese Chambers of Commerce in failing to arrive  at a consensus to present a common memorandum  on Chinese education to the Prime Minister.

It was because of the differences among  these organizations that a common memorandum on Chinese education could not be reached before the March 21, 2004  general election, and now, such differences and deadlock have persisted well after the general election resulting in the  further failure to reach agreement on a common memorandum on Chinese education to the Prime Minister.

DAP calls on Dong Jiao Zong, Hua Zong and Chinese Chambers of Commerce to resolve their differences and deadlock resulting in the failure to reach a consensus for a common memorandum on Chinese education so that this matter can receive the highest attention of the government authorities without any further delay.

DAP MPs propose to have dialogues with Dong Jiao Zong, Hua Zong, the various Chinese Chambers of Commerce and all organizations concerned about the future of Chinese education in Malaysia, and the DAP Deputy Secretary-General and MP for Bukit Mertajam, Chong Eng, who is the MP with special responsibility on the portfolio of primary, secondary and mother-tongue education will take the initiative to arrange and finalise such dialogues.

In this connection, I wish to confirm that the public debate on the Internal Security Act between Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, and me will be held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on Monday, July 12, 2004 at 8 p.m., and not on Sunday, July, 11, 2004 as earlier announced – because the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall had been booked for another function for the second Sunday in July.
