police reports in various states tomorrow to demand investigation into
“phantom advertisements” with BN logo in last general election confessing
that BN government “corrupt and rotten to the very core” Media Conference Statement (4) by Lim Kit Siang (Parliament House, Thursday): The denial by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz in Parliament yesterday that the government and the Barisan Nasional had neither knowledge nor information about the full-page advertisements taken out in all Chinese newspapers in the last general election with the theme that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, is a “modern-day Justice Bao” by confessing that the Barisan Nasional Government was “corrupt and rotten to the very core” is most shocking. With the disclaimer by Nazri, it would appear that Malaysia not only has “phantom voters” and “phantom citizens” but also “phantom advertisements” during general elections. This is a very serious matter, not only because it is a gross deception of the Malaysian voters, raising questions about the legitimacy of the landslide Barisan Nasional victory, but also because of it being an offence under various laws, including the Printing Presses and Publications Act, especially as the advertisement carried the Barisan Nasional logo. Nothing could be wrong with the newspapers concerned, as the people who had taken out these full-page “Justice Bao” advertisements have “heads and faces”. According to the latest Nielsen Media Research, the five Chinese national newspapers in the country, which carried the “Justice Bao” advertisement confessing that the country is “corrupt and rotten to the very core”, have a total readership of close to three million people.
