MCA Ministers in Cabinet should end the charade about the alleged   syndicate to forge STPM certificate caused by a careless  MCA Youth report to Minister for Higher Education, causing unnecessary distraction about proper meritocracy system for placement of university students in IPTAs

Media Conference Statement (2)
by Lim Kit Siang

(Parliament House, Tuesday): In the past two days, there had been screaming headlines and editorials about forged STPM certificates being used to gain entry into universities, with headlines like “Slip palsu jejas wibawa universiti” and righteous declarations  like the following:

Higher Education Minister Dr. Shafie Salleh said a syndicate may be behind the forging of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia certificates that might have been used for entry into universities.

All this because of a careless report by MCA Youth to the Ministry for Higher Education giving the Minister the reason to believe that there is a syndicate to falsify STPM and other certificates to secure entry into universities – when up to now, from all reports, there has not been a single case of such falsification of STPM certificate.

Shafie said there was a possibility the claim made by the MCA Youth national education bureau chairman Dr. Wee Ka Siong that some students had forged STPM certificates to say they had achieved a 4.0 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) but  failed to obtain places to study medicine in institutions of higher learning was true, but Dr. Wee had later clarified that he had not said students had forged their STPM certificates, only  that a student had made a false declaration in his appeal form.

But the frenzy about the alleged syndicate to forge STPM certificate had not been reduced, but further escalated with Shafie talking about the possibility of incorporating security features in examination certificates.

This is worse than   blowing “a mountain out of a molehill”, as there is not even a molehill, as nobody had come across a forged STPM certificate.  This is creating “A mountain out of nothing”!

However, great damage is being done in causing unnecessary distraction about the proper meritocracy system for placement of university students in IPTAs, and in particular the plight of the 99 of the  128 “top scorers” who were initially denied their first choice of medical study, but given places in private medical colleges where the majority could not take advantage, either because of the heavy financial burden or quality of the course.

What is most shocking however is that the MCA Youth, having created a monster of a baseless furore about a non-existent national educational scandal, is unable to slay the monster by putting  the record straight.

The MCA Ministers in Cabinet  tomorrow should end the charade about the alleged   syndicate to forge STPM certificate caused by a careless  MCA Youth report to Minister for Higher Education, causing unnecessary distraction about proper meritocracy system for placement of university students in IPTAs, unless forged STPM certificates could be produced.

DAP will be in the forefront to demand action against any forged STPM or SPM certificates and the syndicate involved, but why is the Higher Education Minister, Higher Education Ministry officials and the media wasting precious time  and energy on an alleged forged STPM syndicate certificate, when not a single forged STPM certificate has come to light?
