University bumiputra/non-bumiputra  intake - Education Ministry should be transparent now and not next year

Media Conference Statement 5
by Lim Kit Siang

(Penang, Wednesday): MCA Deputy Education Minister, Datuk Hon Choon Kim said yesterday that from next year, the Education Ministry will be transparent and will reveal to the public the number of places for each course in every public university.

He said: “It will also indicate to applicants the cut-off point of the previous year for the individual courses to serve as a guide.

“The cut-off point for entry into the various courses varies as it depends on the number of places and applicants.”

The Education Ministry should be transparent now, and not until next year, and Hon should immediately make public the bumiputra/non-bumiputra university intake for every course in every faculty in every public university in the country for this year.

DAP Secretary-General and MP for Kota Melaka, Kerk Kim Hock has challenged Hon to a meeting at Parliament House at noon tomorrow for the MCA Deputy Education Minister to prove that the DAP figures on the university intakes are wrong, as Hon had insinuated that the DAP had misled the people with confusing statistics about university intakes.

I hope Hon would have the courage and responsibility to turn up in Parliament at noon tomorrow to disprove the veracity of the figures on university intakes which had been made public by DAP leaders, namely Kerk, Penang DAP State Chairman and MP for Tanjong, Chow Kon Yeow and myself.

I will be in Parliament at noon tomorrow to see how Hon, who is at liberty to bring along  his battery of officials from the Education Ministry, could prove the DAP figures wrong - and I also hope that he will bring along the figures for a full-breakdown of the bumiputra/non-bumiputra university into every course in every faculty in every public university to show that he is prepared to be transparent now and not in the uncertain  future, which could always be postponed again and again on one excuse or another.
