(Petaling Jaya, Thursday): DAP calls for Thaipusam to be declared a national public holiday to highlight Malaysia’s unique position as the confluence of the world’s great religions and civilisations.

If the Cabinet is not prepared to declare Thaipusam a national public holiday, Parliament when it convenes next month should adopt a motion to declare Thaipusam a national public holiday.

One of the most colourful Hindu festivals to mark the victory of Lord Subramaniam over the demons, Thaipusam is  also symbolic of good triumphing over evil.

As such, Thaipusam is  also a proper occasion for Hindus as well as adherents of other faiths in Malaysia to ponder as to how they could combine the forces of good against the evil in our Malaysian society by giving full meaning to  great teachings of all the religions for justice, freedom, peace and solidarity.
