Irresponsible media continued with their campaign of lies against the DAP even on Polling Day

Media Statement
by Lim Kit Siang

(Petaling Jaya,  Monday): Last Saturday, I said that the 1999 general  election is one where the Malaysian press will forever hold their heads in shame at the most unbelievably  unethical and irresponsible journalism.

The irresponsible media continued with their campaign of lies against the DAP even on Polling Day itself, when all campaigning should end.

Today’s Star for instance carried a false report under the heading  "Opposition set to capture Penang, says Lim", with the following report:

This is a lie for I had never departed from  my statement right from the beginning of the general election campaign that the objective of the DAP is to break the political hegemony of the Barisan Nasional by denying it two-thirds majority whether in Parliament or in the Penang State Assembly.

Today’s Sun in a report under the heading, "Kit Siang has second thoughts about teaming up with PAS" is another distortion, for I had never made any such statement at all.

After the general election, the most disgraceful journalistic chapter of the Malaysian mass media in their reportage and coverage of the dirtiest general election in history should be the subject of the most intense scrutiny and expose.
