(Petaling Jaya, Tuesday): DAP will propose amendments to the motion by the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in Parliament tomorrow so that all MPs, regardless of political party, could unite to condemn the outrageous Wexler draft resolution and the US Government’s attempt to violate Malaysia’s sovereign right by imposing sanctions on Petronas for its oil deals in Iran.

MPs, regardless of whether from Barisan Nasional or opposition, should be able to vote with a powerful unanimous voice in a parliamentary motion to tell the whole world that the outrageous and arrogant act of Wexler and some 30-odd US Congressman in demanding for the resignation of Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister has gone beyond acceptable bounds of international conduct and that Malaysians, regardless of political differences, stand as one to denounce such ugly presumptuousness of Americans who think they have the divine right to dictate who should be leaders of other countries.

Similarly, Malaysians, regardless of political opinion, should be able to stand as one to denounce the US Government for seeking unilaterally to violate Malaysia’s sovereignty and to impose its will by seeking to apply its domestic law, the US Iran-Libya Sanctions Act 1996, on a Malaysian corporation, Petronas, for its oil deals in Iran.

The Malaysian Parliament should make history tomorrow by showing the United States and the world that MPs, both from the ruling and opposition parties, can stand united against any attempt to interfere in the domestic political affairs by denying to Malaysians their sovereign and inalienable right to determine their political leaderships in the country.

Such a motion should neither embarrass the Prime Minister nor the Opposition by making it difficult to support the motion - which would be a grave national disservice in failing to seize a historic opportunity to show the world that Malaysians are united in rejecting any interference in the domestic political affairs.
